Boundaries for Leaders

The strong call to action in this book is that leaders are ridiculously in charge of all these elements, and they must own what they either create or allow to exist.

"Tom was a young engineer employed at one of the country's largest steel companies. He had been an outstanding individual performer, and now he was a new manager, leading a team responsible for producing steel for a major automobile company. After just one week on the job, Tom and his team met with over 20 engineers from that other company. It was a rude awakening. I sat in a room with maybe 20 or 25 of their engineers for the annual quality evaluation of suppliers. And I learned for the first time that we were in the bottom of the bottom quartile as a supplier. We had lousy quality, we had lousy invoicing, we had lousy on-time delivery. And this was my first general manager role! I had grown up as an engineer. And how did Tom respond to this unexpected shock? I had a holy shit moment! I had been in the job literally a week. So part of it was, 'Oh my God, what the hell am I going to do?' Also I thought about how my guys had been in the business for a while, and I thought, 'What the hell have you been doing?' And I was thinking, 'I'm going to clean house!' But then... I've learned that you just can't react viscerally every time something comes up because it just scares people away. So Tom listened attentively as the engineers from the auto company presented their litany of complaints. When they finally finished, he stood up and said, "I wouldn't blame you if you fired us as a supplier. But if you give us a chance to fix these problems, I guarantee you that that we will not have this kind of meeting next year." When Tom met with his team the next morning to discuss the situation, he started by just listening to them. They went on for some time complaining about how the company and their previous boss had made it impossible for them to provide good products and service. Rather than disagree with them or join in pointing fingers at others, Tom listened. "I didn't think about it at the time, but that first couple of hours was very cathartic for them. My focus was not on beating anyone up but rather, what can we do to fix this?" The team responded positively to Tom's approach. The next year when they met, the auto company told Tom that they "never saw any business turn around that quickly in one year." As a result, they began giving Tom's company more business, and Tom went on to a distinguished career, eventually becoming one of his company's top executives"--

An expert on the psychology of leadership and the bestselling author of Integrity, Necessary Endings, and Boundaries For Leaders identifies the critical ingredient for personal and professional wellbeing. Most leadership coaching focuses on helping leaders build their skills and knowledge and close performance gaps. These are necessary, but not sufficient. Using evidence from neuroscience and his work with leaders, Dr. Henry Cloud shows that the best performers draw on another vital resource: personal and professional relationships that fuel growth and help them surpass current limits. Popular wisdom suggests that we should not allow others to have power over us, but the reality is that they do, for better or for worse. Consider the boss who diminishes you through cutting remarks versus one who challenges you to get better. Or the colleague who always seeks the limelight versus the one who gives you the confidence to finish a difficult project. Or the spouse who is honest and supportive versus the one who resents your success. No matter how talented, intelligent, or experienced, the greatest leaders share one commonality: the power of the others in their lives. Combining engaging case studies, persuasive findings from cutting-edge brain research, and examples from his consulting practice, Dr. Cloud argues that whether you’re a Navy SEAL or a corporate executive, outstanding performance depends on having the right kind of connections to fuel personal growth and minimize toxic associations and their effects. Presenting a dynamic model of the impact these different kinds of connections produce, Dr. Cloud shows readers how to get more from themselves by drawing on the strength and expertise of others. You don’t have a choice whether or not others have power in your life, but you can choose what kinds of relationships you want.

Written by an author team from one of Europe's leading management schools, Leadership encourages critical appraisal of the mainstream viewpoints and personal reflection on leadership experience in a way that is both clear and highly engaging. Divided into four parts, the book brings together core themes and debates within the field and provides a wealth of diverse real-world case studies to help readers make the transition from theory to practice. The first part of the book, 'Defining the Terrain', lays the foundation for subsequent chapters by exploring what we mean by leadership, how it compares to management, and why we study it. The second and third parts of the book build on this, addressing core topics that have shaped leadership thinking for academics and practitioners over the last fifty years; as well as considering the cutting-edge debates within the field and tackling issues such as leadership-as-practice, strategic leadership, ethical leadership, and leading change. Finally, the fourth part, 'Developing Leaders', explores traditional and state-of-the-art development techniques, before encouraging the reader to consider their own leadership through identity work. Leadership mappings in the final chapter assimilate the range of theories and themes from the previous chapters, providing a framework for comparisons and connections throughout the book. In addition to the book's thematic approach, carefully designed learning features invite readers to exercise critical thinking skills and develop their own practice and perspectives on the material presented. This book has dedicated online resources, which include: Student resources: Web links to related sites Links to feeds from topical journals Online glossary Lecturer resources: Integrative case studies PowerPoint slides Suggestions for discussion points Video clips of inspirational speeches and discussions on leadership

"Multiple-counseling is, above all, a human relations approach to personal growth. It combines individual counseling with a group process to bring about behavior changes based on new attitudes. Constructive human relationships are learned and practiced through membership in an intimate group. The leader-counselor plays a dual role, for he is both a member of the group and a personal counselor to individuals within the group. However, the group dynamics, discussions, and inter-personal relationships activated by group members provide the most significant learning stimuli. This method is a synthesis of effective techniques used by teachers, doctors, psychologists, and pastors to help their charges "to gain better understanding and acceptance of themselves and others. The intimate group wherever it is found--school, factory, hospital, club, church--provides support and reassurance to its members: they are worthy persons. Through skilled leadership such a group can help its members, regardless of their age or mental health status, to move forward in their personal growth and social adjustments. The adaptability of the multiple-counseling method is shown by its successful use with teen-agers, college students, and adults. Its effectiveness as an individualized learning process was demonstrated by the benefits gained by normal, neurotic, and psychotic participants. Thus this book presents procedures and materials for Personal Development and Human Relations Courses in high school and college; likewise it gives practical guidance for group therapy projects for maladjusted and mentally ill persons"--Book. There is always customer service that could have used more care in packing fragile items so they do not break in transit. Situations similar to this can keep me running on empty for long hours. Make me lose my cool. Feel bumped out. These are all less than positive situations and vibes that keep a person down. Something happened; however, as I kept thinking about staying focused and productive with team building so team members would enjoy working together.
