Brown paper has been used to package a multitude of things since the beginning of time it seems. Ever since I can remember, there have always been brown paper bags. Brown paper bags have been a source of fascination to me because there is a certain mystique about them. They beckon me to peek inside and discover the secret they hold. In my recollection, things that have been packaged in brown paper, more often than not have been beautiful or precious things. Unlike the modern, transparent and impersonal plastics of today, the good old-fashioned brown paper, tough and resilient, still remains the wrapping of choice when it comes to special gifts. We can, of course, dress the present up with coloured string and ribbons if we wish but, let's face it, when we are handed a gift, no matter what it is wrapped in, we just can't wait to find out what's inside, can we? This book, bound in brown paper, contains the greatest of all gifts. As you read the pages; as you discover what's inside; as the truth of the words begin to effect you... you will be led to an amazing revelation. The gift you are seeking is not in any of the chapters - is not on any of the pages. The gift is, in fact, you! Wow! What a promise! You are the gift - all bound up, just waiting to be to be unwrapped. Don't keep yourself from the rest of the world. Go and find out what is inside!

Until recently, historians of reading have concentrated on book ownership and trying to map out a history of who read what. The reading experience has been a subject more difficult to research. As has been pointed out before, egodocuments can be valuable sources in this case. Following this lead, "Literacy in Everyday Life" focuses upon four early modern Dutch diaries in which readers document their daily life and in which they recount their reading. In the analysis, other ways in which these four readers communicated are also addressed, especially speech and writing. This book therefore provides an insight into the possible uses of literacy and the interaction between the printed, written and spoken word in the early modern Dutch Republic.

A Proverb a Day Keeps the Devil Away applies the principles of God found in the Book of Proverbs to daily living. Illustrations are used to trigger the memories of its readers to past and present experiences in life; hopefully, causing the lesson of each devotion to profoundly impact the reader. These illustrations stem from relationships, home, work, play, decisions, reactions, thoughts, injustice and justice. Some are humorous and some very serious. Each one demonstrates the theme of that verse. The Book of Proverbs is as timely as time itself. Times have changed but people have not. They still face the hard issues of life: the same fears and hurts, the same temptations and sin, the same struggle with what is right and wrong, and the same questions about what role God really plays in their life. This devotional study aids its readers in getting a grip on these challenges. Philip Ayers was born in Roanoke, Virginia, on March 2nd, 1948. He is the second born of a family of five. Very early in his life, his family moved to Salem, Virginia, where he resided until he joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of seventeen. He served in the Viet Nam conflict. He was wounded three times, and was awarded the Navy Commendation Metal with Combat V for heroic action in the face of the enemy. Philip played quarterback for the Marine Corps national football team, the Quantico Marines. He was honorably discharged at the rank of sergeant. Philip was saved on March 30th, 1980. Jesus Christ called him to ministry in 1981. He is the pastor of a local church in Roanoke, Virginia. He brings a large pool of experience and Bible knowledge to his readers.

A striking look at the Jewish rite-and at American Jews in all their diversity Since its emergence here a century ago, the bar or bat mitzvah has become a distinctively American rite of passage, so much so that, in certain suburbs today, gentile families throw parties for their thirteen-year-olds, lest they feel left out. How did this come about? To answer that question, Mark Oppenheimer set out across America to attend the most distinctive b'nai mitzvah he could find, and Thirteen and a Day is the story of what he found- an altogether fresh look at American Jews today. Beginning with the image of a party of gaudy excess, Oppenheimer then goes farther afield in the great tradition of literary journalists from Joseph Mitchell to Ian Frazier and Susan Orlean. The two dozen Jews of Fayetteville, Arkansas, he finds, open their synagogue to eccentrics from all over the Ozarks. Those of Lake Charles, Louisiana, pass the hat to cover the expenses of their potluck dinner. And in Anchorage, Alaska, a Hasidic boy's bar mitzvah in a snowed-in hotel becomes a striking image of how far the Jewish diaspora has spread. In these people's company, privy to their soul-searching about their religious heritage, Oppenheimer finds that the day is full of wonder and significance. Part travelogue, part spiritual voyage, Thirteen and a Day is a lyrical, entertaining, even revelatory look at American Jews and one of the most original books of literary journalism to appear in some years.

Jesus' wilderness experience in the fourth chapter of Matthew formed the basis for his inspired relationship with God. His devotional life was key to navigating difficult times. Jesus knew how to systematically get into the presence the Father. Dr. Brown has compiled a forty-day devotional guide to assist believers in their personal devotional studies. This 40-Day devotional guide presents a systematic approach used by the author as he negotiated the wilderness of a wartime deployment and his failure to select for promotion. He learned to journal his journeys through the wilderness. This book contains space for the reader to do the same. Lessons learned can advance our present spiritual development. These valuable lessons can be presented to others. The final added feature is that these devotional stories actually take you onboard a USS Aircraft Carrier. Everyday at sea is unique and challenging. These presented situations take you where Sailors live, work, and eat ? a unique perspective of life underway. Readers will come away with a greater appreciation for the unrivaled competence of our sea service personnel and the power of God's Word.
