Pabongka Rinpoche was one the twentieth century's most charismatic and revered Tibetan lamas, and in Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand we can see why. In this famous twenty-four-day teaching on the lamrim, or stages of the path, Pabongka Rinpoche weaves together lively stories and quotations with frank observations and practical advice to move readers step by step along the journey to buddhahood. When his student Trijang Rinpoche first edited and published these teachings in Tibetan, an instant classic was born. The flavor and immediacy of the original Tibetan are preserved in Michael Richards' fluid and lively translation, which is now substantially revised in this new edition.

Japanese Mandalas

The first broad study of Japanese mandalas to appear in a Western language, this volume interprets mandalas as sanctified realms where identification between the human and the sacred occurs. The author investigates eighth- to seventeenth-century paintings from three traditions: Esoteric Buddhism, Pure Land Buddhism, and the kami-worshipping (Shinto) tradition. It is generally recognized that many of these mandalas are connected with texts and images from India and the Himalayas. A pioneering theme of this study is that, in addition to the South Asian connections, certain paradigmatic Japanese mandalas reflect pre-Buddhist Chinese concepts, including geographical concepts. In convincing and lucid prose, ten Grotenhuis chronicles an intermingling of visual, doctrinal, ritual, and literary elements in these mandalas that has come to be seen as characteristic of the Japanese religious tradition as a whole. This beautifully illustrated work begins in the first millennium B.C.E. in China with an introduction to the Book of Documents and ends in present-day Japan at the sacred site of Kumano. Ten Grotenhuis focuses on the Diamond and Womb World mandalas of Esoteric Buddhist tradition, on the Taima mandala and other related mandalas from the Pure Land Buddhist tradition, and on mandalas associated with the kami-worshipping sites of Kasuga and Kumano. She identifies specific sacred places in Japan with sacred places in India and with Buddhist cosmic diagrams. Through these identifications, the realm of the buddhas is identified with the realms of the kami and of human beings, and Japanese geographical areas are identified with Buddhist sacred geography. Explaining why certain fundamental Japanese mandalas look the way they do and how certain visual forms came to embody the sacred, ten Grotenhuis presents works that show a complex mixture of Indian Buddhist elements, pre-Buddhist Chinese elements, Chinese Buddhist elements, and indigenous Japanese elements.

Filled with hard-won personal observations and practical, tested exercises for following The Way, Every Day Tao lives somewhere between the Tao of this and that, so popular lately (good advice, maybe, but is it Taoism?) and the more traditional teachings of writers steeped in academic study and Eastern culture. Leonard Willoughby comes to the Tao as a Western seeker, looking for both a spiritual practice and a method of living. In this book, he frankly recounts his own struggles--with life and with the Tao. He offers a plenitude of suggestions both for understanding and following the Way and for becoming a fully-integrated personality. After his initiation into the Jade Purity School of Tao, Willoughby's teacher suggested that he write a book on philosophical teachings of this particular school--for Western seekers like himself. You might say this book answers the question: If Tao is the Way, where are we going? In Part One, the author explains the Way, Tao, in simple terms for western minds. In Part Two, Te, or Virtue, he gives readers the advice, stories, and skills they need for the journey. How to give up negativity, perceive reality, practice self-forgiveness and self love. Plus advice about celibacy and sexuality, and more. In Part Three--Sam Ching--Three Realms of Being--the book culminates in the answer--we're going home to our True Selves.

The mandala appears from a dark background, like the baby emerging from the darkness of the womb into the light. Enjoy creative processes that access the subconscious. The way childbirth is perceived influences labor and birth. Subconscious beliefs, formed from what you’ve seen, heard or experienced, can either sabotage or affirm your conscious intentions. Learn how to effortlessly re-write limiting beliefs with ones that assist you during childbirth. Your birth mandala embodies your new beliefs and vision for labor and birth with symbols, images, designs and words. You will find women’s mandalas, journals and their after-birth reflections. From Shannon’s healing of past sexual abuse, Amy’s strength and courage, to Stacy’s power of intention, the themes and revelations are as unique as their mandalas. Creating a birth mandala is an invaluable gift you give yourself for childbirth. “It is the gift that keeps on giving,” exclaims Stacy, a workshop participant.

Guru and Ban are twin brothers born into a Christian family. They both remember past lives, in which Guru was a Buddhist monk and Ban was an American army chaplain. Reincarnation may be unheard of in Christianity, but the belief is less important than the way we live our present lives. The adventures of Guru and Ban will show you that it is possible for Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism, and other beliefs to lead their members into a covenant of mutual respect, love, and sharing. The brothers will challenge you to re-examine your ideas about good and evil, your place in Creation, and your own resurrection. Then, whatever conclusions you reach or beliefs you settle on, you will always be welcome to come and worship at the Green Church in Shalom City.

This classic guide for the study, practice and realization of Buddhist teachings is one of the most fundamental texts of Tibetan Buddhism. Pabongka Rinpoche, a legendary teacher who died in this century, gave a twenty-four day teaching to a mass gathering of monks and nuns and lay people in 1921 which was a complete synthesis of all the Buddha's teachings. This book is a translation from Tibetan of the notes taken at the actual teaching by Trijang Rinpoche who became the current Dalai Lama's tutor. This book contains most of the famous "teaching" stories of Tibetan Buddhism.

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2013 in the subject Communications - Movies and Television, grade: 88%, , course: MA in Communication, language: English, abstract: This dissertation attempts to compare Film Naga-Mandala and fiction Naga-Mandala. The paper focuses on the narrative comparative study of film verses written medium. The fiction Naga-Mandala by Gisrish Karnad was adopted into a film by Director T.S Nagabharana. How the popularity and powerful plot of the written medium showcased in the film medium is being analyzed and interpreted in this paper. The study opts for a qualitative research method. Qualitative research method would enable for a wider scope to collect and compare both the medium through different narrative tools. The narrative tools have been applied and compared to see the changes during the adaptation into film medium.
