Surviving the end of the world was the easy part? It's twelve years since the dead came back. Ravening, mindless zombies have devoured almost every living thing on the planet. The few, scattered survivors are surviving on canned goods and a refusal to give in and die. They are lead by Ayaan, a former child soldier turned brilliant strategist. She's twenty-eight years old, in a world where the average life expectancy is twenty-five. Together with her adopted ward Sarah, who has the psychic ability to see the life-force of the undead, she's gathered a few hundred survivors in Africa and given them safety, something to eat, and the possibility of a future. It would be a lot easier if the zombies weren't so well organized. Out of the east a dead prince has risen. The Tsarevich, the most powerful lich the world has yet seen, is able to command his fellow zombies and has crafted them into an unstoppable army. He has swept across Russia and eastern Europe, hunting down every survivor he can find. He's about to come down on Ayaan and her desert oasis like a tidal wave of death and horror. Yet quickly enough Ayaan realizes he's not just out for her destruction. He has something else in mind, a goal that will take him--and her--across oceans, all the way back to Colorado where the first zombies rose from the grave. He's going back to the Source and when he reaches it, no one will ever be safe again. The fate of all life on the planet is up for grabs, and if Ayaan and Sarah can't stop him there will be no more second chances?

The complete “horrifyingly entertaining zombie-apocalypse trilogy” from the author of 99 Coffins and 23 Hours (Booklist). David Wellington combines the scope of World War Z, the end-of-the-world drama of I Am Legend and The Walking Dead, and mixes in a host of ingenious new concepts to take zombie horror fiction to a breathtaking new level. All three volumes of his trilogy are included here, telling the story of humanity’s monumental struggle to survive an unstoppable global army of flesh-devouring monsters. Monster Island: In search of lifesaving medicine, a former UN weapons inspector—accompanied by a squad of female African teenagers, armed to the teeth—ventures into a nightmare New York City overrun by ten million flesh-eating zombies. Monster Nation: In this prequel to Monster Island, a nightmare plague sweeps across western America, transforming humans into cannibalistic living corpses. In his efforts to contain the horror, a Colorado National Guardsman pursues one female victim who inexplicably retains the ability to reason—and possesses remarkable powers that could be the key to humankind’s salvation. Monster Planet: A ravenous army of the dead sweeps across the globe, under the command of a child-monster called the Tsarevich. Armageddon has arrived, and the zombie master, a fiendish sorcerer, and a courageous young woman will determine the ultimate fate of the human race at the original source of the zombie plague. Gripping and gruesome, The Monster Island Trilogy is a feast of horrors for every true zombie fan to savor.

Leverage the functional programming and concurrency features of Rust and speed up your application development About This Book Get started with Rust to build scalable and high performance applications Enhance your application development skills using the power of Rust Discover the power of Rust when developing concurrent applications for large and scalable software Who This Book Is For The book is for developers looking for a quick entry into using Rust and understanding the core features of the language. Basic programming knowledge is assumed. What You Will Learn Set up your Rust environment to achieve the highest productivity Bridge the performance gap between safe and unsafe languages Use pattern matching to create flexible code Apply generics and traits to develop widely applicable code Organize your code in modules and crates Build macros to extend Rust's capabilities and reach Apply tasks to tackle problems concurrently in a distributed environment In Detail Rust is the new, open source, fast, and safe systems programming language for the 21st century, developed at Mozilla Research, and with a steadily growing community. It was created to solve the dilemma between high-level, slow code with minimal control over the system, and low-level, fast code with maximum system control. It is no longer necessary to learn C/C++ to develop resource intensive and low-level systems applications. This book will give you a head start to solve systems programming and application tasks with Rust. We start off with an argumentation of Rust's unique place in today's landscape of programming languages. You'll install Rust and learn how to work with its package manager Cargo. The various concepts are introduced step by step: variables, types, functions, and control structures to lay the groundwork. Then we explore more structured data such as strings, arrays, and enums, and you'll see how pattern matching works. Throughout all this, we stress the unique ways of reasoning that the Rust compiler uses to produce safe code. Next we look at Rust's specific way of error handling, and the overall importance of traits in Rust code. The pillar of memory safety is treated in depth as we explore the various pointer kinds. Next, you'll see how macros can simplify code generation, and how to compose bigger projects with modules and crates. Finally, you'll discover how we can write safe concurrent code in Rust and interface with C programs, get a view of the Rust ecosystem, and explore the use of the standard library. Style and approach The book takes a pragmatic approach, showing various methods to solve systems programming tasks with Rust and develop resource intensive and low-level systems applications.

We now live in the time of the Gaian hierophant. This is the one who reveals and shows us how to relate to the sacred aspects of Gaia, our planet. Who is this hierophant? Each of us, when we join the campaign with Gaia against the desecration of our natural environment. But first we have to discover what the Earth really is. The Earth's thousands of sacred sites hold a secret: they are functional parts of the planet's geomantic body, consciousness nodes in the Earth's subtle body. Each veils a Light temple, each once known widely and remembered in myth, and Welcome to Your Designer Planet! documents 165 different kinds. The Earth is not an accident of the cosmos, but was designed specifically for humans as an extended Mystery temple primed to support and enhance our greater awareness. And the designers intended that humans help maintain it. Want to help the ecosystem and modulate global warming and climate change? Plug yourself into the Earth's Light grid through your nearest sacred site and start helping. Earth Mysteries researcher Richard Leviton presents a working model of the Earth's geomantic reality based on 24 years of research. The world's myths are the doorway into this fantastic domain of the Earth's visionary geography, showing us where to go and what to do and even what kinds of spiritual beings to expect to see. The future of the Earth is in our hands. Here are some pages from its design manual showing us how to fine-tune our wonderful host planet.

Magic messed up everything. It always chose the worst time to screw everything up. Billy was fine. He kept his magical life away from his normal life and he was happy. Then, everything happened at once. Billy's passion was football. It was simple. It was enjoyable. It was pure. There was only one way to play and the thought that magic couldn't corrupt it. Then someone cheated and his world fell apart. The most amazing player in decades turned out to be cheating magically. There was nothing Billy could do about it. The NFL was a fantasy place. It was on TV and it was real, but it was so far away. Yes, Billy could use magic, he had magical friends, but he was just a fast food closing manager. He couldn't do anything about anything. Then, everyone in the world suddenly spontaneously transforms into centaurs. They don't transform into the traditional equine lower body with a human upper torso, they become centaurs with the lower bodies of a variety of animals. The world is decimated overnight. People find themselves too small or too big for their vehicles. Cars and planes careen out of control and there is massive loss of life. Everything is affected from food production to transportation to football players. The whole world is in chaos. Finding out that one of his magical friends was inadvertently associated with the transformation, Billy learns that a magical event was going to take place in the near future. It's called Brianna's Call and it is the return of magic to the Earth. The only way that the world can transform back into their human bodies is for them to intercept Brianna's Call. In order to do that, Billy must join his favorite NFL team and take them to the championship game. Brianna's Call is going to touch down on Super Bowl Sunday at the Super Bowl. Along the way, Billy must confront the cheating NFL player, battle powerful wizards intent on collecting Brianna's Call for themselves, and deal with a jealous girlfriend.

Evil, death, demons, reanimation, and resurrection. While such topics are often reserved for the darker mindscapes of the vampire subgenre within popular culture, they are equally integral elements of religious history and belief. Despite the cultural shift of presenting vampires in a secular light, the traditional figure of the vampire within cinema and literature has a rich legacy of serving as a theological marker. Whether as a symbol of the allure of sin, as an apologetic for assorted religious icons, or as a gateway into a discussion of liberationist theology, the vampire has served as a spiritual touchstone from Bram Stoker's Dracula, to Stephen King's Salem's Lot, to the HBO television series True Blood. In Such a Dark Thing, Jess Peacock examines how the figure of the vampire is able to traverse and interconnect theology and academia within the larger popular culture in a compelling and engaging manner. The vampire straddles the ineffable chasm between life and death and speaks to the transcendent in all of us, tapping into our fundamental curiosity of what, if anything, exists beyond the mortal coil, giving us a glimpse into the interminable while maintaining a cultural currency that is never dead and buried.

Tim Burton’s films are well known for being complex and emotionally powerful. In this book, Helena Bassil-Morozow employs Jungian and post-Jungian concepts of unconscious mental processes along with film semiotics, analysis of narrative devices and cinematic history, to explore the reworking of myth and fairytale in Burton’s gothic fantasy world. The book explores the idea that Burton’s lonely, rebellious ‘monstrous’ protagonists roam the earth because they are unable to fit into the normalising tendencies of society and become part of ‘the crowd’. Divided into six chapters the book considers the concept of the archetype in various settings focusing on: the child the monster the superhero the genius the maniac the monstrous society. Tim Burton: The Monster and the Crowd offers an entirely fresh perspective on Tim Burton’s works. The book is essential reading for students and scholars of film or Jungian psychology, as well as anyone interested in critical issues in contemporary culture. It will also be of great help to those fans of Tim Burton who have been searching for a profound academic analysis of his works.

Planet Narnia

For over half a century, scholars have laboured to show that C. S. Lewis's famed but apparently disorganised Chronicles of Narnia have an underlying symbolic coherence, pointing to such possible unifying themes as the seven sacraments, the seven deadly sins, and the seven books of Spenser's Faerie Queene. None of these explanations has won general acceptance and the structure of Narnia's symbolism has remained a mystery. Michael Ward has finally solved the enigma. In Planet Narnia he demonstrates that medieval cosmology, a subject which fascinated Lewis throughout his life, provides the imaginative key to the seven novels. Drawing on the whole range of Lewis's writings (including previously unpublished drafts of the Chronicles), Ward reveals how the Narnia stories were designed to express the characteristics of the seven medieval planets - - Jupiter, Mars, Sol, Luna, Mercury, Venus, and Saturn - - planets which Lewis described as "spiritual symbols of permanent value" and "especially worthwhile in our own generation". Using these seven symbols, Lewis secretly constructed the Chronicles so that in each book the plot-line, the ornamental details, and, most important, the portrayal of the Christ-figure of Aslan, all serve to communicate the governing planetary personality. The cosmological theme of each Chronicle is what Lewis called 'the kappa element in romance', the atmospheric essence of a story, everywhere present but nowhere explicit. The reader inhabits this atmosphere and thus imaginatively gains conna?tre knowledge of the spiritual character which the tale was created to embody. Planet Narnia is a ground-breaking study that will provoke a major revaluation not only of the Chronicles, but of Lewis's whole literary and theological outlook. Ward uncovers a much subtler writer and thinker than has previously been recognized, whose central interests were hiddenness, immanence, and knowledge by acquaintance.
