Modern Dublin provides a new history of the capital of Ireland during the 1960s. Through a series of case studies, it examines how an aging eighteenth-century city was rapidly transformed by speculative office construction and suburban development, and explores how this impacted on the lives of the city's ordinary inhabitants. It tracks how the initial excitement which surrounded this process slowly turned to disillusionment asthe decade progressed: exploring the development of a popular movement to oppose these urban changes, composed of architects, students, housing protestors, and gentrifiers. The volume adds to the literature on European post-warurban development and throws new light on the popular reception of broader processes of social and economic modernization in 1960s Ireland.

Land So Fair opens in 1737 on a Hudson Valley farm, where the family's land, "sought, bought, cleared, planted, harvested, bequeathed, fought over, challenged, confiscated, and laced with bones and blood," is threatened anew each generation. Three strong-minded Dutch-American women, related to each other by marriage, deal with the privations of life in a wilderness community, the deaths of beloved family members, threats to their land by outside usurpers, and a dawning realization that slavery, once considered "necessary," is leading inexorably to tragedy. Troubles within the Dutch church, combined with violent uprisings by slaves, make life a test of endurance, physically, emotionally, and morally. As the struggle for independence from England versus loyalty to the Crown heats up, war erupts, and daily life takes on an ever-more desperate character. A fierce local "civil war" intensifies the looting, plundering, massacre, battles, and treason of the Revolution. In the end, the futility of war is clear when the English commander in chief acknowledges to George Washington in 1783 that the conflict should have ended with the American victory at Trenton seven years before, in 1776. "Fabend's evocative prose recreates a vivid New World. A poignant and gripping story, richly researched."

This volume concerns itself with the ethical principles and concepts relating to the environment: nature, resources and the planet. This is placed in the context of ethical theory, and consideration is given to the way these values have transformed received ethical traditions. Issues include the intrinsic value of nonhuman species, obligations to future generations, and the aesthetic needs of humanity. Both the universal responsibilities and their application are investigated. The international responsibilities to the planet are seen in the context of some of the most alarming future scenarios: limited access to water, the changing global climate, population explosion, the destruction of ecosystems, and even the extinction of humanity.

At the age of twenty-one, Brian Boyd wrote a thesis on Vladimir Nabokov that the famous author called "brilliant." After gaining exclusive access to the writer's archives, he wrote a two-part, award-winning biography, Vladimir Nabokov: The Russian Years (1990) and Vladimir Nabokov: The American Years (1991). This collection features essays written by Boyd since completing the biography, incorporating material he gleaned from his research as well as new discoveries and formulations. Boyd confronts Nabokov's life, career, and legacy; his art, science, and thought; his subtle humor and puzzle-like storytelling; his complex psychological portraits; and his inheritance from, reworking of, and affinities with Shakespeare, Pushkin, Tolstoy, and Machado de Assis. Boyd offers new ways of reading Nabokov's best English-language works: Lolita, Pale Fire, Ada, and the unparalleled autobiography, Speak, Memory, and he discloses otherwise unknown information about the author's world. Sharing his personal reflections, Boyd recounts the adventures, hardships, and revelations of researching Nabokov's biography and his unusual finds in the archives, including materials still awaiting publication. The first to focus on Nabokov's metaphysics, Boyd cautions against their being used as the key to unlock all of the author's secrets, showing instead the many other rooms in Nabokov's castle of fiction that need exploring, such as his humor, narrative invention, and psychological insight into characters and readers alike. Appreciating Nabokov as novelist, memoirist, poet, translator, scientist, and individual, Boyd helps us understand more than ever the author's multifaceted genius.

The author spent over forty years working in the health care industry, gaining fi rsthand knowledge about the interworkings of the various industries that represent the whole. After graduating from the University of Texas Pharmacy School in 1959, Fritz worked in retail pharmacies for about twenty years and as an owner for fi fteen of those years. During this time, valuable experience was gained while working with doctors, drug-company representatives, nursing homes, health insurance companies, and the consuming publichis customers. After selling his retail pharmacy, more experiences were gained selling pharmacy computer systems to retail pharmacies, hospital pharmacies, and institutional pharmacies. Additional experiences came from working as a business broker listing and selling retail pharmacies. Beginning about 1969, the whole health care industry evolved from a free enterprise environment to one controlled by health insurance companies, drug manufacturers, litigious lawyers, and government-entitlement programs. After many years of witnessing the demise of the health care industry and building frustration over the absence of truth emanating from the talking heads representing all forms of our news media and politicians, he wrote is fi rst book, Health Care: It Can Be Fixed. There is not a more qualifi ed spokesman, nor a better friend, to health care than Fritz. He is no longer active in the industry, so he is absolutely free to speak the truth and help people understand where better health comes from. In addition to writing about health care, he is also a public speaker and a consultant to businesses and corporations.
