Drummers tapped once out the cadence of military orders in combat--advance, retreat.... From the athletic term, there is also a different "playbook," the Bible. Unassigned on the USS Curtiss at Pearl Harbor, the author's uncle, was not even listed on the crew. On deck December 7, 1941, he had to brush aside the dead gunner to bring down the plane headed toward him. Jesse Keith Milbourne succeeded--giving the crew enough time to get on deck--but lost his arms and legs, living another day or two, though all tombstones were dated December 7. This book could be titled All Hands on Deck! to save the ship.God's people are to love their neighbors as themselves, including being involved publically. There are plenty of examples in the Bible for political and social involvement but not for a system. There are also warnings. Those who want to force Bible-believing people out of government, media, social communication, business, education... hurt especially the poor. When Bible-believing persons have avoided involvement as unspiritual, we wonder why things are falling apart?Jesus did not pray in His High Priestly Prayer that His people would be taken out of the world (John 17:15). Instead believers are be God's redemptive showcase to be salt and light, not mere "ornaments" for the Fellowship. Without spelling out political planks before one can be born again, Jesus has people working "under the radar" when big government programs fail the vulnerable, but believers are leaven for what God is baking in the world.

Kenneth MacMillan's ballets are in constant demand by world-famous companies, particularly Romeo and Juliet, Manon and Mayerling. However, MacMillan was tormented by an acute sense of being an outsider, and often at odds with the institutions in which he worked. A real-life Billy Elliot from a Scottish working class family, MacMillan demonstrated a prodigious talent for dancing from an early age. Following the premature death of his mother, the young MacMillan sought an escape, and despite his father's disapproval, secured a place at Sadler's Wells. Paradoxically he found himself crippled by stage-fright during the height of his professional career, leaving him with only one option - choreography. He went on to produce ballets which defied convention and became renowned for challenging audiences. Despite criticism, MacMillan achieved international acclaim, becoming artistic director of both the Berlin Ballet and the Royal Ballet. On a personal level he found unexpected happiness with his wife and daughter in the later stages of his life, making it all the more tragic when he died suddenly at the age of 62. This stunning biography reveals a complex artist who fiercely guarded his own privacy, whilst his ballets communicated his darkest and most intimate thoughts.

Broke and broken-hearted don’t need to be your destiny. Neither do flat sales or frustrated teams. These bleak outcomes stem from doing what’s always been done, but this book is for those who believe in different. Regardless of whether you are alone or the leader of a major organization, you are that person who simply cannot shake the belief that doing the same things you’ve always done won’t work anymore. Here’s the good news. It’s not too late. In fact, you’re early—you’re thinking about this now. You can still avoid the “squeeze the blood from the turnip” mindset and the fear of what’s coming next quarter. Different has and always will be the differentiator for individuals, ideas, and industries. Are you a different maker? Do you criticize by creating? Do you see things others don't? You play an essential role, now more than ever. Different Drummer is for those who never want to be the same.

Jest has been on his own since his mid-teens and still blesses the chance that let him realize his dream of playing percussion in a band that has become his substitute family. Although he misses the close sharing, he doesn't expect to find a partner and certainly not one as clearly out of his element as the man who one night wanders into the club where Jest's band plays, looking totally lost and friendless. Greene has struggled to build himself a life far from the undisciplined communal community in which he grew up. He's lonely though, and not sure how to remedy that, so he works as a game programmer in Silicon Valley until he makes a faux pas at a party. Traveling aimlessly, he meets Jest and the other members of Taken By Storm, and is intrigued but terrified of slipping back into a disorderly world like the one of his childhood. They say opposites attract, but can a rebel drummer and an uptight programmer find enough common ground for a relationship?

Health Care, 39(5), 113–143. Perrin, E., Menvielle, E., & Tuerk, C. (2005). To the
beat of a different drummer: The gender-variant child, Contemporary Pediatrics.
Author: Jack Drescher
Extremely gender variant children and adolescents (minors), increasingly referred to as 'trans' or 'transgender children,' are small in number. In recent years, their situation has become highly sensationalized, whilst the matter of how to best treat them remains an area of controversy. A growing body of research supports emerging treatment approaches, but more research is still needed to answer a host of questions: Do trans minors have a psychiatric disorder or a normal variation of gender presentation? Should treatment be aimed at helping them accept the bodies into which they were born or should parents, clinicians and schools accommodate their wishes of transition? At what age should transition begin? What are the implications – physical, psychological, social and ethical – of various treatment approaches? The first part of this volume explores different clinical approaches to transgender minors in the USA and abroad. The second part contains responses to these approaches by commentators from various fields including biology, child psychiatry, civil rights activism, ethics, law, gender studies, queer theory and psychoanalysis. The work will be an invaluable source for parents and families looking at how to proceed with a trans child, as well as clinicians seeking to make appropriate referrals. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Homosexuality.
