The Hybrid Diet

We have an inbuilt 'dual-fuel 'mechanism for making the best of periods of feast and famine. This is our ability to run on glucose from carbs and on ketones from the fat we eat and our own body fat.

A radically different, practical and doable way to achieve a healthy weight and substantially reduce your risk of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and dementia. 'If you follow the advice here, you will improve your health, lose weight, avoid diabetes and reduce your risk of cancer and Alzheimer's. What more could you ask?' Dr Malcolm Kendrick, GP and author of The Great Cholesterol Con 'A highly readable, smart and well-reasoned book based on the latest generation of rigorous science' Nina Teicholz, author of The Big Fat Surprise, and Adjunct Professor, New York University Recent research has shown that a diet that is very low in carbs and high in good fats is effective for weight loss, can counteract many diseases and also help athletic performance and endurance. The drawback is that it is difficult to stick to - because most people love carbs. But, as The Hybrid Diet demonstrates, we don't need to choose. The human body has been designed through millions of years of evolution to burn two different sources of fuel - glucose (which comes from the carbohydrates in fruit and vegetables) and ketones (which are made in the body from fat) - and to switch between them when food is scarce. The point of The Hybrid Diet is to show you how to make the best use of both options when you need them, and how best to switch between them. In their quest to discover the perfect diet, leading health journalist Jerome Burne and nutrition expert Patrick Holford have examined the latest cutting-edge science and have put together a plan that is sound, simple and delicious - one that is based on how your body works best.

This monograph is about predation in vertebrate animal community. The studies were done in the seminatural terrains with transitional mixed forest within the European forest zone in Belarus. The result part was organised as a top-down flow: First, the community characteristics related to predators were estimated. I presented data on predator species richness, population density and biomass with special attention paid to the changes in predator species diversity occurred during the last two centuries and particularly in connection with the American mink and raccoon dog naturalization. Then, the main features of predator food niches were given, and the structure of various predator guilds and size structure in predators were analysed. The next part of the monograph was devoted to examining of community-important factors acting in semi-natural terrains. Such factors affected either the whole community or its marked fragment. The last quite a large part of the monograph consisted of many chapters which present more or less essential results on different predator species, and stresses hot questions of their population ecology.

Aquaculture is now recognized as a viable and profitable enterprise worldwide. As aquaculture technology has evolved, the push toward higher yields and faster growth has involved the enhancement or replacement of natural foods with prepared diets. In many aquaculture operations today, feed accounts for more than one-half the variable operating cost. Therefore, knowledge of nutrition and practical feeding of fish is essential to successful aquaculture. This book is not written exclusively for scientists but also for students, practicing nutritionists, and aquaculturists. It covers the known nutrient requirements and deficiency effects for different fishes, and digestion and metabolism of nutrients and energy. It discusses nutrient sources and preparation of practical and research feeds. It gives directions for conducting fish nutrition and feeding experiments. Feeding practices for salmonids, channel catfish, tilapias, shrimps and hybrid striped bass are presented. Since the first edition of this book was printed, the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences has revised the nutrient requirements for fish. These revisions are in the present edition. Other additions to this revised edition are chapters on nutrition and fish health, and bioavailability of nutrients. Each original chapter has been meticulously revised and updated with new information. Aquaculture is a dynamic area and new technologies are being introduced continuously; therefore, some of the material discussed in this revised edition may become obsolete quickly. Nonetheless, the material presented has been thoughtfully selected and updated to make it of maximum use to persons whose interests range from general aquaculture to animal nutrition to feed manufacture.

Ancient Babylonian inscription X Preface Preface to the English Edition The book you are reading is a translation from Russian into English. Within a pretty short term this book saw two editions in Russian. The authors received in spiring responses from readers that both stimulated our continuing and improving this work and made sure it would not be in vain of us to try to multiply our readers by covering the English-speaking engineering community. When we prepared the present edition, we took into account interests of the Western readers, so we had to make some changes to our text published earlier. These changes include the following aspects. First, we excluded a lot of references and discussions regarding Russian engi neering codes. It seems to us those are of no real interest for Western engineers oriented at Eurocode or national construction design regulations.

Ancestors and canine cousins of our dogs didn't eat “krunchy kibble” or “meat 'n gravy in a can.” They ate what they found or caught and it wasn't cooked or “enriched” either! It was high in protein, with balanced fats, and usually included a few fruits, vegetables and grasses. Steve Brown, an expert on canine nutrition, shows how you can bring the benefits of the canine ancestral diet to your dog by feeding him differently as little as just one day a week. And no, you won't need to lead a pack of dogs on a hunting expedition! Just follow Steve's well-researched and easy to follow ABCs to make improvements to whatever your dog currently eats.
