The increasing incidence of both chronic pancreatitis and pan creatic cancer was the primary impetus for the organization of this meeting, an additional factor being the widespread existence of pancreatic disease within Italy itself. It is well known that the treatment of chronic and particularly of acute pancreatitis is still a matter of controversy, and it seemed useful to compare our own experience with that of other centers working in the same field. Consequently, in addition to numerous Italian specialists in the field, doctors from the Federal Republic of Germany, Denmark, Great Britain, France, and Austria were invited to attend the meeting. The symposium lasted two days and comprised eight sessions dealing with the anatomy and physiology of the pancreas and the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of pancreatic diseases. A central feature of the discussion on the surgical treatment of chronic pancreatitis was the debate between those who favor the use of drainage and those who believe resection to be the best treatment. Finally, I would like to thank Dr. Cavallini and Dr. Pederzoli very much for their help in organizing the meeting and also the local authorities for their aid. Professor Adamo Dagradi Director of the Institute of Clinica Chirurgica, Verona Opening Address I am pleased to welcome all partlclpants and particularly the guests from abroad, to this meeting on the clinical evaluation of pancreatitis.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States and has the worst mortality rate of any cancer. It is very likely that the number of deaths from pancreatic cancer each year will surpass the number of deaths from other more common cancers, such as breast cancer. This volume is dedicated to helping curb these daunting statistics by providing a knowledge base for clinicians and scientists who want to make a difference for patients both now and in the future. Edited by an eminent team consisting of a medical oncologist, a cancer surgeon and a pathologist, with contributions from over 100 world-class experts in the field, the book includes 54 state of the art chapters -- all with full color illustrations. Special "Commentaries," written by world authorities on the subject, provide expert analysis and counterpoint to selected topics.

Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas secretes digestive enzymes into the small intestine through a tube called the pancreatic duct. These enzymes help digest fats, proteins, and carbohydrates in food. The pancreas also releases the hormones insulin and glucagon into the bloodstream. These hormones help the body use the glucose it takes from food for energy. Normally, digestive enzymes do not become active until they reach the small intestine, where they begin digesting food. But if these enzymes become active inside the pancreas, they start 'digesting' the pancreas itself. Acute pancreatitis occurs suddenly and lasts for a short period of time and usually resolves. Chronic pancreatitis does not resolve itself and results in a slow destruction of the pancreas. In severe cases, bleeding, tissue damage, and infection may occur. Pseudocysts, accumulations of fluid and tissue debris, may also develop. And enzymes and toxins may enter the bloodstream, injuring the heart, lungs, and kidneys, or other organs. This new book presents the latest research from around the world in this field.

The medical condition characterized by the inflammation of the pancreas is known as pancreatitis. There are two principal categories of pancreatitis - acute and chronic pancreatitis. Symptoms of pancreatitis are abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. In acute pancreatitis, the pancreas undergoes sudden inflammation. It is caused by a gallstone blocking the common bile duct, systemic diseases, trauma, heavy alcohol use and mumps. It can be recurrent or it may progress into chronic pancreatitis. It can be treated through intravenous nutritional support, pain control and intravenous fluid rehydration. Chronic pancreatitis is a long-term inflammation of the pancreas in which the structure and function of the pancreas is irreversibly changed. It is generally caused by idiopathic pancreatitis, tumors, intraductal obstruction, calcific stones, ischemia, etc. Chronic pancreatitis can be treated through therapeutic endoscopy and surgery. This book brings forth some of the most innovative concepts and elucidates the unexplored aspects of acute and chronic pancreatitis. It strives to provide a fair idea about these medical conditions to help develop a better understanding of the latest diagnostic and therapeutic advances in this field. Coherent flow of topics, student-friendly language and extensive use of examples make this book an invaluable source of knowledge.
