This book is a follow-up to '50 Christmas Carols', and is intended as a collection of traditional hymns in a practical format, with chord symbols and in manageable keys. All of the hymns (apart from Parry's original version of 'Jerusalem' for voice and piano, provided as an appendix) are harmonised simply in four parts for choirs (or instrumentalists) to perform with a minimum of rehearsal. They are notated in closed score on two staves, so they can be easily played on the piano or organ. In addition, chord symbols are given for guitarists and keyboard players who prefer reading chords and melody. The words for all the verses are printed as underlay, rather than block text, as I find this is easier to read, especially for less experienced choral singers. Apart from 'Jerusalem', all of the hymns are printed on a single page, so there is no need for page turns. The keys are chosen, and transposed where necessary, so that no key signature has more than three flats or sharps, and to provide comfortable ranges for most singers.

Do Indians have historical sense? Indians have a past. There is no doubting that fact, celebrated in literature, perhaps the oldest that man had created. Epics, myths, heroes and events which are very much a part of the living tradition - are they real? Is there any truth in the ancient Indian historical tradition called Puranas? Who are Aryans? Where have they come from? Mohenjo Daro - what was its name when it was still a living city? Asuras and Devas - are they just figments of a grand fiction? The Vedic seers like Vasishta and Viswamitra - were they individuals, clans or institutions? Ayodhya, Varanasi, Hastinapura and Lanka - do we know where really they are? What happened to the people of the Harappan civilization after it had collapsed? When did the Mahabharata War take place?

Hymn Canticles for the Church Year

Hymn Canticles for the Church Year

This book is a successful attempt to provide additional avenues for the scriptures to find a home in human hearts. In this volume Mountain supplies at least one scripture paraphrase and/or theme hymn to go along with existing hymn tunes for each Sunday and major festival in the Revised Common Lectionary for all three cycles. The hymn-canticles in this collection may be used as hymns in their own right, or as lyrical substitutes for the scripture readings. It is the author's opinion that these are most effective as the hymn that either precedes or follows the sermon or as hymns to underscore the meaning of other special events in worship. In addition to chapters for cycles A, B and C, there is an index for hymn-canticles listed by books of the Bible, an index for theme hymns, and an extensive bibliography.Charles Mountain has given us new liturgical thoughts for some wonderful old hymn tunes. Such new thoughts give us pause to think anew about our relationship with our heavenly Father. Certainly, these new thoughts tied together with familiar melodies will be helpful and meaningful for congregation in our modern setting. David W. Peters Pastor, Messiah Lutheran Church Denver, CO
