This text provides an in-depth, scholarly, and broad-based examination of serial murderers and their victims. Featuring coverage supported by extensive data and research, the book profiles some of the most prominent murderers of our time, addressing the highest-profile serial killer type--the sexual predator--as well as a wide variety of other types (male, female, team, healthcare, and serial killers from outside the U.S.). Author Eric Hickey examines the lives of over 400 serial murderers, analyzing the cultural, historical, and religious factors that influence our myths and stereotypes of these individuals. He describes the biological, psychological, and sociological reasons for serial murder and discusses profiling and other law enforcement issues related to the apprehension and disposition of serial killers. The Encyclopaedia of Serial Killers, Second Edition provides accurate information on hundreds of serial murder cases - from early history to the present. Written in a non-sensational manner, this authoritative encyclopaedia debunks many of the myths surrounding this most notorious of criminal activities. New major serial killers have come to light since the first edition was published, and many older cases have been solved (such as the Green River Killer) or further investigated (like Jack the Ripper and the Zodiac Killer). Completely updated entries and appendixes pair with more than 30 new photographs and many new entries to make this new edition more fascinating than ever. New and updated entries include: Axe Man of New Orleans; BTK Strangler; Jack the Ripper; Cuidad Juarez, Mexico; John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo, the Sniper Killers; Gary Leon Ridgway, the Green River Killer; and Harold Frederick Shipman.

An estimated 800,000 children are reported missing each year in the United States. Only one in 10,000 are found dead. Yet unsolved child murders are almost a daily occurrence—of nearly 52,000 juvenile homicides between 1980 and 2008, more than 20 percent remain open. Drawing on FBI reports, police and court records, and interviews with victims’ families, this book provides details and evidence for 18 unsolved cases from 1956 to 1998.

Two subjects continue to fascinate people the Old West and a good mystery. This book explores and examines twenty-one of the Old West's most baffling mysteries, which lure the curious and beg for investigation even though their solutions have eluded experts for decades. Many relate to the death or disappearance of some of the best-known lawmen and outlaws in history, such as Billy the Kid, Buckskin Frank Leslie, John Wilkes Booth, The Catalina Kid, and Butch Cassidy. Others involve mysterious tales and legends of lost mines and buried treasures that have not been recovered yet."

Annotation The scope of the July 1999 conference covers Brownian ratchets, stochastic resonance, biomedicine, semiconductors, electronic devices, lasers, turbulence, and spectroscopy. Among the topics of the 66 papers are quantum stress tensor fluctuations, signatures of electron-electron interaction in nanoelectric device shot noise, the scale invariance of 1/f noise, Parrondo's paradoxical games, and what physicists can contribute to economics. Other topics include additive noise and noise-induced nonequilibrium phase transitions, entropy generation in computation and the second law of thermodynamics, high frequency noise modeling in MOSFETs, a percolative approach to resistance fluctuations, short time-scales in the Kramers problem, activated escape of driven systems, and numerical methods for systems excited by white noise. Down comes a deluge of sonorous hail, Or prone-descending rain. Wide-rent, the clouds Pour a whole flood, and yet, its flame unquenched, Th’unconquerable lightning struggles through. Ragged and fierce, or in red whirling balls, And fires the mountains with redoubled rage. Black from the stroke, above, the smould’ring pine Stands a sad shattered trunk; and, stretched below, A lifeless group the blasted cattle lie. James Thompson, “The Seasons” (1727) have been investigating ball lightning for more than two decades. I published a ball lightning report in Nature in 1976 that received worldwide publicity and I consequently many people wrote to me with accounts of their own experiences. Within a very short time, I had accumulated about 200 firsthand accounts, and the file has continued to grow steadily since then. Several things impressed me. Few of those who wrote to me had any detailed foreknowledge of ball lightning at the time of their observation. Nonetheless, once reports of other phenomena such as St. Elmo’s fire had been eliminated, the remaining descriptions were remarkably consistent. Furthermore, nearly all who contacted me were keen to have an explanation of what they had seen and seemed entirely sincere.

Despite advances in DNA testing, forensics, and the investigative skills used by police, hundreds of crimes remain unsolved across Canada. With every passing day trails grow colder and decades can pass before a new lead or witness comes forward if one comes forward. In Unsolved, Robert J. Hoshowsky examines twelve crimes that continue to haunt us. Some cases are well-known, while others have virtually disappeared from the public eye. All of the cases remain open, and many are being re-examined by police using the latest tools and technology. Hoshowsky takes the reader through all aspects of the crimes and how police are trying to solve them using three-dimensional facial reconstructions, DNA testing, age-enhanced drawings, original crime scene photos, and more. None of the individuals profiled in Unsolved deserved their fate, but their stories deserve to be told and their killers need to be brought to justice.

Ararat, a behemoth of a mountain, is 17,000 feet of pain for anyone who dares trespass upon its icy heights. It is a place of dread where one wrong step can send climbers careening down a steep, glacial field into the abyss known as the Ahora Gorge. Many have died on those slopes, and some have never been seen again. So why do climbers come to this place on the far east of the Turkish Frontier? It is not for sport alone; in fact, for most, that is far from the real reason. They come to Ararat flirting with death to find an old boat we all know as Noah’s ark. It is said that its rotting corpse is somewhere up there in the swirling clouds and slumbering silence of ancient ice. Come with Mary Irwin, one of the original “ark-aeologists,” as she travels to Ararat and back again uncovering many of the ancient secrets of Noah’s ark. You may be surprised what you find!

This fourth edition of the conference focused mainly on noise and fluctuations at the nanometer scale in electron devices, bio-materials, and mesoscopic systems. Since the first conference, the aim of the UPoN conferences is to provide a forum for researchers working on noise and fluctuations, where they can present and discuss their scientific problems with particular attention to those which resist solutions. Topics include: Theoretical frontiers on noise and fluctuations; experimental frontiers on noise and fluctuations; enhanced and suppressed shot noise; noise and coherence; noise and chaos; constructive role of noise; noise in biological systems; noise in devices; and noise in complex systems and non-Gaussian fluctuations.

All papers in this proceedings volume were peer reviewed. The purview of this third conference was shifted toward biology and medicine. Among the topics covered were: the constructive role of noise in the central nervous system, neuronal networks, and sensory transduction (hearing in humans, photo- and electroreception in marine animals), encoding of information into nerve pulse trains, single molecules and noise (including single molecule detection and characterization by nanopores - molecular "Coulter counting"), concepts of noise in neurophysiology (randomness and order in brain and heart electrical activities under normal conditions and in pathology), the role of noise in genetic regulation and gene expression, biosensors, etc.
