"The most pressing ills in our present-day civilization are our mental ills, our unsatisfactory or abnormal forms of thought, feeling, and action. But before we can proceed intelligently in the treatment of these ills, we must know why they occur. We must have a psychopathology before we can hope to have a mental hygiene or a rational therapeutics. But along what lines are we to proceed in the development of our psychopathology? Shall we follow in the footsteps of the psychoanalyst, adopting the psychoanalytic concepts and the psychoanalytic technique? There is no doubt that in psychoanalysis, as in every other doctrine or school of thought, there is some truth and some error. The only question is as to the essential soundness of its basic structure and of the foundation upon which it is built. If we believe that it is merely the details which are wrong, then the thing to do is to take up our abode in this "house that Freud built," making only such changes and additions to it from time to time as we find necessary or desirable. If, on the other hand, we decide that the foundation and framework of psychoanalysis are unsound, then the right course to pursue is to abandon it altogether and build an entirely new edifice upon an entirely different foundation. Written in D. H. Lawrence's most productive period, 'Psychoanalysis and the Unconscious' (1921) and 'Fantasia of the Unconscious' (1922) were undertaken initially in response to psychoanalytic criticism of his novel Sons and Lovers. They soon developed more generally to propose an alternative to what Lawrence perceived as the Freudian psychoanalytic theory of the unconscious and the incest motive. The essays also develop his ideas about the upbringing and education of children, about marriage, and about social and even political action. Lawrence described them as 'this pseudo-philosophy of mine which was deduced from the novels and poems, not the reverse. The absolute need one has for some sort of satisfactory mental attitude towards oneself and things in general makes one try to abstract some definite conclusions from one's experiences as a writer and as a man'. At the turn of the last century C. G. Jung began his career as a psychiatrist. During the next decade three men whose names are famous in the annals of medical psychology influenced his professional development: Pierre Janet, under whom he studied at the Salpetriere Hospital in Paris; Eugen Bleuler, his chief at the Burgholzli Hospital in Zurich; and Sigmund Freud, with whom Jung began corresponding in 1906. It is Bleuler, and to a lesser extent Janet, whose influence bears on the studies in descriptive and experimental psychiatry composing Volume 1 of the Collected Works. This first volume of Jung's Collected Works contains papers that appeared between 1902 and 1905.
