The Woodstock Music & Art Fair was held in the United States in 1969 and attracted an audience of more than 400,000. Scheduled for August 15-17 on a dairy farm in the Catskill Mountains of southern New York State, northwest of New York City, it ran over to Monday, August 18. Billed as ";An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music";, it was held at Max Yasgur's 600-acre dairy farm near the hamlet of White Lake in the town of Bethel. Located in Sullivan County, Bethel is 43 miles (70 km) southwest of the town of Woodstock in adjoining Ulster County. During the rain-swept weekend, 32 acts performed outdoors including such headliners as Grateful Dead; The Who; Joe Cocker; The Band; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; and Jimi Hendrix. It is widely regarded as a pivotal moment in popular music history, as well as the definitive nexus for the larger counterculture generation, and has spawned numerous rock festivals ever since. Anniversary celebrations large and small are taking place throughout the country and around the world - along with new films, music, books and socially responsible products - confirming what we all feel: the spirit of Woodstock is alive and flourishing.

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock festival with this in-depth retelling of those famous three days of peace, love, and music—overflowing with images and behind-the-scenes information, you'll be fully immersed in the '60s vibe. Half a million fans, described as a "swarm of hippies," flowed non-stop into Yasgur's Farm, Bethel, New York, over the weekend of August 15–18, 1969, to watch 32 legendary music acts, including Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix. With all the roads around Bethel gridlocked, helicopters ferried in performers who couldn't reach the venue any other way. Rolling Stone magazine said the Woodstock festival was a moment that changed history, but some festival-goers, soaked by rain, wallowing in muddy fields, and without enough bathroom facilities, described it as total chaos. Electrical problems and ankle-deep water on stage caused havoc with the schedule and a thunderstorm suspended performances on Sunday afternoon. So it was 9 a.m. on Monday morning by the time the star of the show, Jimi Hendrix, appeared, and many people were already heading home. Despite all the criticism, the festival is regarded as a defining moment of the 1960s. Some superlative musicians gave unsurpassed performances captured forever in the Woodstock movie. Many performed songs expressing opposition to the Vietnam War—a sentiment shared by the vast majority of the audience—and, 50 years later, the term "Woodstock Generation" is still used to describe the anti-war youth counterculture of the 1960s.

In 1962, the New York Mets spent their first year in existence racking up the worst record in baseball history. Things scarcely got any better for the ensuing six years--they were baseball's laughingstock, but somehow lovable in their ineptitude, building a fiercely loyal fan base. And then came 1969, a year that brought the lunar landing, Woodstock, nonstop antiwar protests, and the most tumultuous and fractious New York City mayoral race in memory--along with the most improbable season in the annals of Major League Baseball. It concluded on an invigorating autumn afternoon in Queens, when a Minnesota farm boy named Jerry Koosman beat the Baltimore Orioles for the second time in five games, making the Mets champions of the baseball world. It wasn't merely an upset but an unprecedented, uplifting achievement for the ages. From the ashes of those early scorched-earth seasons, Gil Hodges, a beloved former Brooklyn Dodger, put together a 25-man whole that was vastly more formidable than the sum of its parts. Beyond the top-notch pitching staff headlined by Tom Seaver, Koosman, and Gary Gentry, and the hitting prowess of Cleon Jones, the Mets were mostly comprised of untested kids and lightly regarded veterans. Everywhere you looked on this team, there was a man with a compelling backstory, from Koosman, who never played high school baseball and grew up throwing in a hayloft in subzero temperatures with his brother Orville, to third baseman Ed Charles, an African-American poet with a deep racial conscience whose arrival in the big leagues was delayed almost a decade because of the color of his skin. In the tradition of The Boys of Winter, his classic bestseller about the 1980 U.S. men's Olympic hockey team, Wayne Coffey tells the story of the '69 Mets as it has never been told before--against the backdrop of the space race, Stonewall, and Vietnam, set in an ever-changing New York City. With dogged reporting and a storyteller's eye for detail, Coffey finds the beating heart of a baseball family. Published to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Mets' remarkable transformation from worst to best, They Said It Couldn't Be Done is a spellbinding, feel-good narrative about an improbable triumph by the ultimate underdog.

From 70s ritural performances to the post-feminism of a new century, Mary Beth Edelson has been destabilizing preexisting representations of women. Whether in her version of the Last Supper, in which Georgia O'Keeffe plays Christ to disciples Lee Krasner, Nancy Graves, Louise Bourgeois, and Yoko Ono; or in her isolation and re-narrativization of stereotypical images of Hollywood femmes fatales, Edelson never loses sight of what is at stake in her work: the construction, representation, and consumption of images of women. This book, a virtual scrapbook of the feminism movement, includes coversations between Edelson and such seminal feminist figures as Carolee Schneemann, Nancy Spero, and Miriam Schapiro. Designed by the artist and full of 30 years worth of her multidisciplinary feminist and community-based work, The Art of Mary Beth Edelson offers Edelson the ultimate control over the construction of her own image in the present and the opportunity to recontextualize her past.
